5 Things Your Website Must Have To Increase Conversion Rates

Posted on February 21, 2013 by Nikhil P Naik

No matter what type of site you have, there is some sort of conversion you are going after. You may be an ecommerce website trying to sell products, or you may be trying to get more leads, or downloads of your white paper, or people filling out your contact form. Some conversions are easier to track than others, but no matter what type of business you have, every website has need to increase their conversion rates.

You are already spending a lot of time, effort, and maybe even money trying to get visitors to your website. But if you can’t get those visitors to perform your desired action, then all of that work in getting those visitors to your site will have been for naught.

Many website owners overcomplicate optimizing for conversion rates. Before you get ahead of yourself, it’s important to start with the basics. You must start with a basic foundation setup for your website’s conversions.

Increase website conversion rate

So, to help you get started, here are 5 simple things you must have to increase conversion rates:

1. Calls to Action

Every website owner wants more conversions. But if you aren’t telling your visitors what you want them to do, and making it easy for them to do it, then it’s hard for them to actually complete those actions, now isn’t it? It’s amazing how many websites don’t properly use calls to action on their pages.

When thinking of increasing conversion rates, the very first step must be to think of the actions you want your visitors to perform. Then make it easy for them to perform those actions! Come up with enticing, easy to understand calls to action. Then display them on your site in ways that will stand out and that are easy to find and follow.

2. Keywords

Just like with calls to action, it is also surprising how many website owners haven’t yet caught on to the proper use of keyword optimization. Just like with your calls to action, spend some time to think of the most appropriate keywords for your site. Think of the terms that your potential customers would use to find products or services similar to yours. Then make sure to optimize the pages of your website with these keywords.

Website Keywords

This keyword optimization not only helps people to find your website, but it also ensures that your content is relevant to what these people are searching for. This also makes your content easy to read and follow. By providing people what they are looking for, that leads to happier visitors. And happy visitors means more conversions.

People are using keywords to find products and services like yours. So use keywords to help them find you, and to help show them that you do indeed have what they are looking for. All of these things will help to increase your conversion rates.

3. Limited Advertisements

Want to know a quick way to lower your conversion rates? Have too many advertisements on your site. Too many advertisements on a page does two things: 1) it annoys visitors, and 2) it makes it difficult to make it clear to your visitors what actions you want them to perform.

Too many advertisements are not only annoying to visitors, but they also are very distracting, taking away the attention from the calls to action that you’ve so carefully created and placed on your site. So, to help increase conversions on the important actions that you actually want your visitors to take, limit the other distractions (including excessive advertisements) on your site.

4. A/B Testing Strategies

A-B-testing

If you want the highest conversion rates possible, it is not good enough to just throw up a page and hope it converts. You need to try out different things on your site, and then see if they lead to conversions or not. And the best way to test and track this is through A/B testing. Set up different A/B tests on your site with your call to action buttons, etc. There are many free tools you can use to help you set up and track the results of these A/B tests.

Get some A/B tests set up on your site, and see what is working to get those conversions! Then make the changes you need to optimize for what is working best.

5. The Right Tools

To help increase conversion rates, you need the right tools. There are many great free tools that can help you to track your conversion rates, as well as to set up different tests to help boost your conversion rates. Here are just a few of the many great free conversion rate tools:

  • Google Website Optimizer: great tool from Google to test & analyze your content

  • Clue App or Five Second Test: creates “memory tests” to see what things are memorable (and forgettable) on your site
