Number of Person to Person SMS Cut Down to 5 Per Day – New Rule By TRAI

According to the new Person to person Restriction Policy implemented by TRAI [Telecom Regulatory Authority of India], you will no longer be able to send over 5 messages to a specific person. On sending the 6th message, you will get theSending Failed” message after which you will receive an SMS which is pestering and freaking out every youngster now. The SMS reads as follows:

Hi! You have sent 5 SMS today. As per Govt. guidelines, you can’t send more outgoing person to person SMS today. Your SMS services will be resumed post Midnight.

mobile operators indiaThis rule is here to stay for the next 15 days as many reports have flown in regarding life-threatening SMSs being sent to North Eastern students in Bangalore and parts of Hyderabad. Also considering the fact that some groups are spreading baseless and anti-religious rumors through bulk SMS, government was left with no other choice.

The GPRS usage on your cellphone devices has been limited to 20 KB during this 15 day ban period hence affecting the mobile surfers as well.

I am not really sure if this rule has been implemented by all the telecom operators so far. But Tata Docomo and Aircel users have been affected by this move. In fact this is really absurd and a pathetic move by the TRAI infringing into the lives of the Mobile users.

According to the latest piece of updates that we received, it seems like Govt. of India has come up with this ban with TRAI having no role to play in this. According the piece of evidence from the leading newspapers [TOIYahooHT]:

The decision was taken after reports of widespread circulation of SMSs and MMSs containing misleading information about Assam violence, threats to people of northeastern origin living in other parts of the country and doctored videos. The home ministry has asked department of telecommunications to implement the order through the telecom operators.

Here is what the official circular looks like that was issued by DoT [Department of Telecomm]:
