As more and more businesses and individuals build websites, they naturally want as many people as possible to visit their website, either to buy something or just read what they have to say. However, getting people to their site is quite possibly the hardest part about building a successful website. So how do most people find websites to visit?Website and seo

Utilizing Search Engines

Most people will use a search engine in order to find a website that has information that is relevant to what they are looking for. People tend to visit the more popular search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo, since they mostly return the best results. Website owners want to be on top of those search results so that when people are searching for a certain term, they will visit their site and hopefully become customers/readers. Getting a website to show higher up on those search engines is called search engine optimization, and it is an ever-changing science for those involved in the profession.

Search engine optimization, or SEO as most people call it, is the practice of getting a website to rank higher in the search engines through a variety of methods that the search engines deem favorable. While this is not an exact science, businesses understand the general principles and techniques that it takes to make a website rank higher so that people can find the sites easier. The proven theory is that the higher a site is in the search engine rankings, the more traffic the site will receive.

There is no set method to making a website rank higher, as the major search engines constantly change their algorithms so that people cannot cheat the system. Even though the science behind the search engines change frequently, most people in the industry rely on a few tried and true strategies to get sites to rank higher.

How to Rank Higher

One strategy that most SEO businesses use is by adding quality content to a site, and plenty of it. Google and the other search engines love fresh, new content, and the more of it, the better. However, the content can’t be of poor quality either, as the search engines may penalize sites who use a lot of low quality content. Sometimes, website owners use low quality content and may see some short term success. However, over the long term, those sites will slowly fall in the search engine rankings and sites with quality content will naturally rise over time.

Better Blog rankingsThe other major strategy that is used in SEO is building something called backlinks to a site in order to receive a better ranking. A backlink is where one site will link to another website, so that people on the other site can now visit the website that was linked to. This is often used when quoting sources of information or giving a review of a site. Search engines deem backlinks relevant, since they trust website owners to only link to another site if the information is relevant and of high quality. This in turn makes links seem credible to the search engines.

However, links have started to lose credibility to the search engines, as people have abused the system to try and gain better rankings unnaturally. Now, search engines look more for the quality of a link rather then the quantity of links. A quality link from a reputable website is worth more then 100 links from a low quality site. But how does a search engine like Google determine how reputable a site is?

Page Rank

Google Pagerank

Google has their own ranking system in place called Page Rank, where they rank a site from 0 to 10 based on the quality of the site. Sites like Facebook or Wikipedia will receive extremely high ranks, either in the 9 or 10 range, while lower quality blogging sites will get from a 0 to 3. Links from the high quality sites are extremely hard for regular sites to receive, but links from sites with a Page Rank of 3 are still considered to be good in quality.

People who make their living in this industry mostly tell people to create quality content and the rest will come later. However, most sites will likely need a boost at some point in time, which is why having an expert on search engine optimization look over a site is the best way to go. It is a volatile industry, which means it is very hard for an outsider to come in and optimize the site properly.
