With a plethora of social media platforms already available, it can be easy to dismiss new ones as they become available. However, taking this approach can mean your local business is potentially missing out on a great marketing opportunity. Therefore, it is important to be aware of what has recently come on the market and assess whether you should leverage the platform. Google+ for business is less than a year old, but it is gaining steam and is a social media tool that your local business should investigate.
So what is Google+, and why should your business leverage it?
As a new platform, Google+ with its estimated 90 million users, is not as popular (at least yet) as say, Facebook. But, what makes this platform different is many robust features you can’t quite get with any other platform. Also, unlike Facebook, it wasn’t created for use as a personal social tool that has morphed into a business one. Therefore, it’s been described as being more business oriented than many of the other social media platforms.
Its unique power comes from the personalized search results that it provides to users. It can allow searchers to see if they are connected to current and past customers of your business; this feature is significant as we all know we’d prefer to get a referral to a business prior to buying from it.
Google+ also allows you to influence the search engine rankings of your business page. When individuals view your content online and “like it” with Google+’s “+1” feature they have the ability to influence your page’s rank as well as sharing it with their friends. It’s great your business can accomplish two things at once in this fashion with Google+.
Google+ also allows you to segment what information you share with different parts of your customer base with “Circles.” Therefore, if you find new customers routinely have the same questions about your product, you can group new local business customers into a “Circle.” Your business can then provide this “Circle” with key resources that may help them be more informed consumers and have the best possible experience with your local business.
Another great feature of Google+ is the “Hangout.” This feature allows you to have an online conference with customers, potential clients, employees, etc. There are great opportunities to leverage this feature to educate new customers or invigorate previous customers who haven’t purchased for your local business for a while. Do you have a new product coming out? Great, why not connect with customers using this feature and share with them why they “just have to have” your latest product. Get creative and see how this feature could change how you create engagement with your customer base.
