SEO is one of the hot topics in Internet marketing, but that does not mean that everyone is well versed in exactly what it entails. The fact is that SEO is a mystery to a lot of people, Including Internet marketers.

However, if you are either about to embark on an Internet marketing campaign or are already running one, search engine optimization is one area you cannot afford to overlook.Most marketers understand the importance of paid advertising in promoting any kind of business and to reach new customers, but sadly, too many do not understand the importance of taking advantage of the free advertising that can be gotten by obtaining good search engine rankings.

The search engines use complex algorithms to determine which sites are most relevant for any particular search term, and optimizing your site for these terms can reward you with higher search engine rankings.

Why is ranking so important?

It’s because most users of the search engines will not look past the first few search results for a particular search term. Therefore, if your site does not appear in the top few results or at least on the first page of results, it is unlikely that you will receive much traffic for that term.

The world of search engine optimization is complex and constantly evolving and it can be hard to keep up with it. For this reason, many people utilize the services of a SEO expert to help them achieve top search engine placement. If you cannot afford this as of yet, there are many things you can do to improve your search engine ranking.

You should start by familiarizing yourself with some of the factors that the search engines use in ranking a website. These include such things as keyword density, titles, meta-tags, inbound links, content and existing traffic.

Keyword density

Keyword density refers to the number of times a particular keyword is used in a piece of content, the theory being that a high density indicates that the content is highly relevant to that particular search phrase. Overuse of keywords, however, could result in penalties if the search engines determine the keywords are used inappropriately. They can also result in redundant sounding and uninteresting content for the readers.

Meta-tags are bits of HTML code containing keywords that are used by some search engines in evaluating the subject of a webpage. However, you should take care to avoid placing irrelevant keywords in these tags, as this can also result in your site being penalized.

Inbound links:

Inbound links, or links on other sites that point to your own, are another factor that search engines use to rank websites. Search engines also factor in the rank of the websites pointing to yours, so the higher the rank of those sites, the better. Finally, don’t forget the quality of the content on your own website. The longer visitors stay on your site, the better, and don’t think the search engines don’t factor this into account when determining the rank of your website!

The good thing about SEO is that it doesn’t require any specialized tools and is completely platform agnostic. You can perform effective SEO whether you use a Mac, a PC or an iPad. It’s really about investing the time and attention to SEO that it deserves.
