VLC player tricks

VLC player can do a lot of added things above your imagination. It has got almost all codecs that helps it to play any video format. I found a few VLC player tricks, some of which you wouldn’t be knowing about. So, I thought it would’t be a bad idea to share it with all.

1. Take Snapshot of a Video being played

VLC Player allows you to take a Screenshot of the video being played. The Advanced Controls helps you to take more accurate shot by playing the movie frame by frame. To enable the Advanced Controls, Go to View > Advanced Controls. After that you can click on the arrow pointing icon to take the screenshot. You can use the down facing arrow button to forward the scene frame by frame. The snapshots are saved in PNG format in your My Pictures folder in Windows.

2. Download, Play YouTube videos and other videos online

Yes, With VLC it is possible to download videos from various online sources such as Youtube and Dailymotion. First you need to grab the URL of the Youtube video Link. Go to Media > Open Network stream. Paste the URL and click on the Play button.

Once the video streaming starts, Go to Tools >Codec Information and at the bottom of the window you will see a Location box. Copy the URL and paste it on your browser’s address bar. it will now download the file which you can save it to your hard disk. Alternatively, you can record the video as well.

3. Listen to online radio

VLC includes hundreds of Shoutcast radio stations. All you need to do is to enable it. Go to Media > Services Discovery > Shoutcast radio listings. Just open the Playlist and browse through the stations.

4. Play RAR files

VLC has the ability to  play videos  zipped inside RAR files. You do not need to worry even if the file is divided into several parts. Just load the first part (i.e. part001.rar ) and it will automatically detect the other files and play them.

5. Rip DVDs

VLC also acts as a DVD ripper. Its just that you do not notice it as there are better rippers available. But this one is handy when you do not have any other rippers to work with. You can expect a decent quality DVD rip.Just open Media >  Convert/Save > Disk tab. Here you can adjust the Starting Position and rip only specific chapters. Enter file name making sure to end with .mpg  and start the ripping process. Save it.

6. Record videos

You can also record videos during playback. Just follow the same procedure that you did for Take Snapshot of a Video being played. Go to View–>Advanced Control. The record button will now appear. Clicking on the button while playing a movie or video will start recording. Clicking it again will stop the recording.

7. Play in ASCII mode

This is really amazing. VLC can playback movies in ASCII art. To enable ASCII mode, Follow the steps below.

  • Go to Tools –>Preferences.
  • In the bottom, change the Show Settings to All.
  • Go to Video > Output and  select “Color ASCII art video output” from the drop down menu.  Save it. Now play any video file to view the ASCII art.

8. Convert Audio and Video formats
Convert video and audio files from one format to another using simple methods in VLC. Several different formats are supported like AVI, WMV,  MP3, MP4,  OGG and various others. To access the converter:
  •  Go to Media > Convert/Save.
  •  Load the file you want to convert using the Add button and click Convert.
  •  Now choose the output format and output file location. Thats it.

Hope you liked this. Feel Free to share it with all your mates!
